Cholesterol is a waxy substance in the body, which your body needs to build healthy cells. Cholesterol is carried in the blood to various parts through blood by the protein, which is known as lipoprotein. There are two types of cholesterol, based on which the lipoprotein carries.  Low density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as bad cholesterol, because it build up in the arties making it hard and narrow. High density Lipoprotein (HDL) is good cholesterol which helps to remove the excess cholesterol in the blood and takes it to the liver.

Your LDL cholesterol number is:

  • Less than 100 -Optimal
  • If it is 100-129 – Near optimal/above optimal
  • if it is 130-159 – Borderline high
  • if it is 160-189 – High
  • if it is 190 or above – Very high

HDL cholesterol number is:

  • if it is less than 40 – Low and considered as risk factor
  • If it is 60 or above –Good and reduce the risk of heart disease.

The main risk of heart attack is the increased levels of cholesterol in the blood. When the cholesterol levels are high in the blood, cholesterol is build up on the walls of arteries, narrowing the arteries, slows the blood flow to the heart muscles.
